Service above Self

The Rotary motto, Service above Self, is at the core of everything the club does. We looked at our community and opportunties to engage in international projects and chose to focus on several where we feel an impact may be felt.  These are the current projects supported by the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club:

Scholarships

Every year the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club awards up to eight $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors from Camas High School, Hayes Freedom High School, and Washougal High School. Seniors are asked to complete an application and write an essay on the topic Service Above Self.  Supporting Education is one of the six causes to which Rotary is dedicated, and it is our hope that these scholarships will help make higher education and vocational education more accessible to those in our community.

Little Lending Libraries

In early 2018 the concept of Little Lending Libraries was presented to the Club and the project was born. A dozen volunteers built and painted custom cabinets which will soon be placed throughout the community. The idea of the Little Lending Libraries is to promote literacy by offering free books to local residents, with the expectation that readers will either return the books, or trade a book they have read, so we can keep them stocked and ready for the next reader who comes along.  We will be posting locations of the libraries as soon as they are finalized, so you can check them out!

Dictionaries

Rotarians deliver free dictionaries to third graders in Camas and Washougal every fall. This annual project is a wonderful way to make a difference in the lives of children. For many of them, this is the first book they have ever owned. One more step towards literacy.

Student of the Month

Seven months of the year, two sophomores are chosen from local high schools as the students of the month by Camas-Washougal Rotary. They are invited to attend a Rotary meeting along with their family, where we learn what makes these students stand out above the rest. They receive their award and are given a chance to practice their public speaking skills.

Young Men in Action

Young Men in Action, sponsored and staffed by the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club, strives to help protect youth from problem behaviors while promoting positive behaviors. The program provides fifth-grade boys an opportunity to interact with peers who are not in their circle of friends and focuses on development of life skills such as friendship, health, hygiene, careers and manners, while being fun and age-appropriate.

Young Women in Action

YWIA is for fifth grade girls at Hathaway Elementary. The strong, yet subtle lesson for fifth grade girls participating in the Camas Washougal Rotary Young Women in Action (YWIA) mentoring program is that, when we are comfortable with ourselves we become more accepting of others.

The free eight-week program provides girls an opportunity to interact with peers who are not in their circle of friends and fits neatly into the school week on Wednesday afternoons, when school dismisses early. The curriculum focuses on development of life skills such as friendship, health, hygiene, career, manners, etiquette, and “envision your life” exercises, while being fun and age-appropriate.

A field trip to the restaurant at Columbia Ridge Senior Living in Camas allows the girls to practice manners.  The personal care day focuses on basic hygiene and personal care with a field trip to the Manning Academy of Cosmetology which provides each student with a self-esteem-boosting hair style makeover.

The strong, yet subtle lesson for the girls participating is that when one is comfortable with herself, she becomes more accepting of others.

The program ends with a farewell celebration in which the girls practice social skills they have learned, receive a photo of themselves and friends they made during the program, certificates, flowers and cake.
